Jawai Leopard Reserve

India’s Only Leopard Hills

Jawai, located in the Pali district of Rajasthan near the Jawai Dam, is one of India’s most unique and emerging wildlife destinations. Unlike traditional national parks, Jawai is a conservation area where leopards coexist with local Rabari communities in an extraordinary example of human-wildlife harmony.

Why Jawai?

Jawai is unlike any other wildlife destination in India. Here, leopards live in granite cave formations alongside villages, creating a surreal landscape that feels more like the African savanna than typical Indian jungle.

  • 50+ Leopards — one of the highest leopard densities in the world
  • Granite Hills — stunning rocky landscapes where leopards den in caves
  • Human-Wildlife Coexistence — leopards and Rabari shepherds live side by side
  • Jawai Dam — a scenic reservoir attracting flamingos and migratory birds
  • Luxury Camping — premium glamping experiences under the stars

Safari Experience

Jawai safaris are conducted in private 4×4 jeeps and are very different from traditional national park safaris:

  • No Fixed Zones — the jeep roams freely across the granite hill terrain
  • Dusk Safaris — leopards are most active during twilight, making evening safaris magical
  • Village Encounters — interact with local Rabari communities and learn about coexistence
  • Crocodile Spotting — Jawai Dam is home to marsh crocodiles

Best Time to Visit

Jawai is open year-round, but the best months are:

  • October–March — Pleasant weather, excellent leopard sightings, flamingos at the dam
  • April–June — Hot days but leopards are more visible near water sources
  • Monsoon (July–September) — Lush green landscapes, fewer crowds, but some roads may be inaccessible

What to Expect

A typical Jawai trip includes:

  • 2 leopard tracking safaris (morning and evening)
  • Visit to the Jawai Dam for birdwatching
  • Interaction with local Rabari pastoral communities
  • Night camping under the stars in luxury tents
  • Photography sessions at sunrise over the granite hills

How to Reach

  • By Air: Nearest airport is Udaipur (160 km, ~2.5 hours) or Jodhpur (160 km)
  • By Train: Jawai Bandh station on the Delhi-Ahmedabad route
  • By Road: Well-connected via NH-25 from Udaipur, Jodhpur and Mount Abu
