Machali — The Queen of Ranthambore

The Most Legendary Tigress in Indian History

Machali (T-16), also known as the “Queen of Ranthambore,” was the most photographed and celebrated tigress in the world. Born in 1997 in the Ranthambore National Park of Rajasthan, she ruled the park’s prime territory for nearly two decades — an extraordinary lifespan for a wild tiger.

Early Life & Rise to Fame

Named “Machali” (meaning “fish”) because of the fish-shaped markings on her face, she was first spotted as a cub near the scenic Padam Talao lake. As she grew, she established dominance over Zones 3 and 4, which remain the most sought-after safari zones to this day.

Machali gained international fame when she was filmed fighting and killing a 14-foot mugger crocodile to protect her cubs. The footage went viral worldwide and cemented her status as an icon of raw, fearless power.

Legacy & Conservation Impact

Over her 19-year reign, Machali:

  • Raised 11 cubs across 4 litters, with most surviving to adulthood
  • Generated an estimated ₹800 crore in tourism revenue for India
  • Was featured in numerous BBC and National Geographic documentaries
  • Became the face of Project Tiger and Indian wildlife conservation
  • Her image appeared on a commemorative Indian postage stamp

The Final Chapter

Machali passed away on 18th August 2016 at the age of 19 — well beyond the average wild tiger lifespan of 10-15 years. She received a state funeral, with forest officials and locals paying tribute to the Queen who had single-handedly put Ranthambore on the global tourism map.

“Machali was not just a tiger. She was an emotion, a movement, and the reason thousands of people fell in love with Indian wildlife.”

Her daughters — Krishna (T-19), Sundari, and Athara — carried her bloodline forward, and today, Machali’s grandchildren like Arrowhead (T-84) continue to thrill visitors in the same territory she once ruled.
